It's been a rushed few days between work and family obligations, with the rest of my week set to be much the same. But here's a quick round up of some fun stuff:

I began coverage of the French comic on my Sonic blog. This comic ran for two issues back in 1994, though only the first volume was a "proper" comic, while the second volume was a guidebook that contained some short comic strips. I've posted about the first volume today and will move onto the second volume next time I update the blog.

Sticking with Sonic, my weekly update of my Kofi gallery was also some Sonic fanart. I have now almost run out of what I'd regard as recent art to upload there though. So after next week, I need to either draw something new or dig a little deeper into my archives.

Lastly, I was tagged on tumblr to share a snippet from a recent WIP. Because I admittedly don't have much right now, I ended up posting something from an original story that I sometimes tinker with called "Region of Hedone". This story is purely for me to write the odd scenes from to amuse myself and not anything I actually ever intend to write as a full piece. The extert in question sets a scene between two of the villains (who are also my favourite characters) - the goddess Hedone (daughter of Eros and Psyche) and her casual consort Reggie Bamburgh:

When Reggie approaches her on the docks, he strides with that same arrogance that she knows leaves many of her followers saying he has no right to act the way he does around her – as if he’s equal to a goddess. But Hedone is quite literally hedonism. What the others don’t realise is that she would choose Reggie over them and their simpering any day of the week. His confidence in pursuing what he wants is like catnip to her.

Yet she doesn’t turn around to face him just yet, continuing her steady gaze over the ocean. He needs to work for it.

And he will do.

I started writing for kinkmemes again. That was actually something that finally made me get my ass into gear about making an account here after putting it off for over a year, since many of the kinkmemes are here and I was suddenly looking at the Dreamwidth logo a lot more regularly.

Honestly, I'd underestimated how much I'd missed it. Writing something anonymously to fulfill the request of a stranger. Years ago, I did that for both the Ace Attorney and Professor Layton fandoms. Which led to me posting fics on my own account for those fandoms, which led to... more than I had the capacity to deal with in the case of Layton, which ultimately killed the drive. But this time around I've put something in place to stop me from doing that, so I can say with reasonable confidence that anything I write for a kinkmeme will be unlikely to appear on SamCyberCat (but don't worry, it's not anything that I think anyone following this username would be all that interested in regardless).

It's funny, because a friend (perhaps unintentionally?) pointed me in the direction of a kinkmeme that I liked the look of and going through it, there were so many inspiring prompts that it made me want to write fanfic again for the first time in a long while. There's a longer reason why I lost heart with it, but perhaps that's another journal for another day.

Because I'm the sort of person who makes invisible rules for myself despite knowing better, I decided to start at the beginning of the kinkmeme and do a "first pass", writing for any prompts that I felt that I could very easily do. If that goes well, the "second pass" will be writing for prompts that I think I can do, but require a bit more effort.

Anyway, obviously with starting at the beginning, I'm writing for older prompts, where the people who made them may have since figured their prompt was never going to be filled and lost interest. But for two of the ones I've posted so far, they both found the original prompter and received delighted comments from them. One of those is the longest comment I've received on a piece of writing for years. You could feel the joy from this person. In both cases, they were fics about rarepairs and in my experience, rarepair fans generally do leave the best comments, because they never take what they get for granted. (For example, back in the Free! fandom, I loved MakoHaru, but knew I'd never get the same feedback for that ship as I would for rarer ships, because there were already so many other MakoHaru fics to choose from out there that were probably better than me dipping my toe in sometimes.)

But it just felt good. Writing should be for yourself. That's the bottom line. But for me personally, sometimes writing something that I know I'll enjoy writing, but it's something that someone else asked for is a great satisfaction as well. Would I be making this journal saying as such if I hadn't got those two nice comments? Perhaps not. But I did get them and their joy gave me joy in turn, so I'm going to celebrate that.
